On Saturday, October 18, 2025, the 5th Children’s ‘Forest-Making’ and Experiential Learning Event “Measuring Tree Growth in the Ishida Forest!” was held at Ishida Forest in Nyoigadake, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. A total of 21 participants, including 10 elementary school students and their guardians, joined the event. Despite the light rain, they worked with forest instructors to measure the growth of saplings, followed by a nature observation walk in the afternoon.

Divided into teams, the participants searched for saplings they had previously planted, such as Yamazakura (mountain cherry) and Kunugi (sawtooth oak). The children’s eyes lit up as they attached tags and recorded measurements, discovering how much the trees had grown.

In the afternoon, the group explored the autumn forest with instructors. They found many fallen acorns, discovered “baby tree” seedlings, and enjoyed tossing propeller-shaped seeds into the air.

Finally, participants received completion certificates from the instructors and concluded the program with smiles.

Participants shared the following feedback:
-
“I was happy to see that the tree I planted has grown so big. I want to come back and see it grow more.”
-
“It was fun because there were so many acorns and chestnuts on the ground.”
-
“The instructors taught us about edible forest fruits like akebia. I was surprised because I didn’t know they could be eaten.”
KMFA will continue to collaborate with companies and organizations to provide children with opportunities to connect with forests.
