Event Report: "Let's Plant Trees in the Ishida Forest!" December 6, 2025

Sponsored by Ishida Sanpo-yoshi Association, Ishida Co., Ltd., and Chuo Warehouse Co., Ltd.

On Saturday, December 6, 2025, the 6th Children’s Experiential Learning Event “Let’s Plant Trees in the Ishida Forest!” was held at Ishida Forest in Nyoigadake, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. A total of 31 participants, including 15 elementary school students and their guardians, joined the event. Blessed with the clear sky, the group participated in tree planting and nature observation, followed by a festive craft session in the afternoon.

During the morning nature walk, participants were amazed to count the annual rings on a stump, discovering a tree that had lived for 148 years. Upon reaching the planting site, they learned the importance of nurturing forests for the future. Working together with pickaxes, the teams carefully planted a total of 95 Japanese cedar (Sugi) saplings, ensuring each was set straight into the mountain soil.

In the afternoon, families enjoyed making original Christmas wreaths using natural materials collected from the forest, such as Japanese green alder (Alnus firma), known as Yashabushi. The creative session resulted in many beautiful, one-of-a-kind holiday decorations.

Finally, participants received certificates of completion from the instructors, concluding a productive day of forest stewardship.

Participants shared the following feedback:

  • “Planting trees on the mountain was tough but very fun. I want to come back and see how they grow.”

  • “The most memorable part was counting every single ring on the cedar stump—it was so old!”

  • “My first time tree planting helped me realize both the importance and the hard work involved in forest management.”

  • “The wreath turned out so beautifully; my family was surprised at what we could make from natural materials.”

KMFA will continue to collaborate with companies and organizations to provide children with ongoing opportunities to connect with and learn from our forests.
