Event Report: Kyoraku Centennial Forest Fund project ”Enjoy Interaction with Trees in the Honen-in Forest!"

On Sunday, October 5, 2025, the Kyoraku Centennial Forest Fund project “Children’s Forest Creation and Experiential Learning – Enjoying Interaction with Trees in the Honen-in Forest!” was held at the foot of Mt. Daimonji in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto. Despite a one-day postponement due to rain, 27 children and their guardians participated energetically.

The day began with “Invitation to the Forest! Let’s Observe Trees While Solving Quizzes.” Participants walked through the woods, identifying species like Camphor and Camellia. They learned about the origins of tree names and the unique characteristics of their leaves and fruits through interactive observation.

In the afternoon, the group moved to the Honen-in Forest Center due to the weather. Participants crafted original kalimbas (thumb pianos) using wood sourced directly from the Honen-in forest. Following the craft session, children challenged themselves to cut logs using hand saws, becoming completely absorbed in the hands-on experience.

Closing The event concluded with the presentation of commemorative gifts. Despite the light rain, it was a productive day for all participants, who left with a deeper connection to the forest and its resources.
