On January 20, 2026, 45 students from Hamuro Kindergarten in Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto City, participated in a “Forest Delivery Lesson” guided by the Kumogahata Commons and the Yui Forestry Cooperative.
The day began with an engaging “Forest Talk” by the instructors. Using photographs of the diverse flora and fauna living in the woods, they provided an easy-to-understand introduction to the vital roles of forest ecosystems. The children were particularly fascinated to learn how mushrooms grow in the wild. Following the lecture, the students took part in a hands-on workshop to plant shiitake mushroom spores into Konara Oak (Quercus serrata) logs.
Using hammers, the children worked diligently to drive the spawn plugs into pre-drilled holes. While they found the task challenging at first, they soon became completely absorbed in the work. After the activity, the children shared enthusiastic comments, such as “That was so much fun!” and “I can’t wait for the shiitake mushrooms to grow!”
It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to deepen their interest in nature and discover the joy of the forest.
These “Forest Delivery Lessons” are made possible through the “Green Fund” contributions received from the public. We invite you to continue supporting this initiative to help us provide meaningful environmental education for the next generation.
