Event Report: "Fureai Forest Classroom" Held in Kyotamba Town

Since 2012, the Nissay Green Foundation and the Kyoto Model Forest Association have collaborated with Kyotamba Town and other local partners to restore forests damaged by typhoons. As part of these ongoing efforts, the “Fureai Forest Classroom” was held on October 23, 2025. This marked the first time the program was hosted in Kyoto Prefecture (and the third time in Japan), with 4th-grade students from Kyotamba Municipal Mizuho Elementary School participating as the region’s future environmental leaders.

Hands-on Satoyama Maintenance

Guided by the Kyoto Forest Instructor Association, students began the day with nature observations in the satoyama, followed by a hands-on pine forest maintenance session. Under expert supervision, the students cleared dead pine branches to allow sunlight to reach the forest floor. This process revitalizes the ecosystem and ensures the forest remains manageable for the future.

Creative Crafting and Closing

Following the maintenance work, the students used pine cones to create original woodcrafts, showcasing their creativity. During the activities, the group even made a special discovery—a nest of the Warbling White-eye (Zosterops japonicus), also known as Mejiro, hidden in the branches!

To conclude the event, the Chairperson of the Nissay Green Foundation presented each student with a certificate of participation, bringing the successful day to a close.
